Zuid Afrika 3 Lesotho

Lesotho is an independent country, surrounded on all sides by South Africa. They fought the Dutch with help of the British. They never new Apartheid and the people are very friendly and don’t have that underlying resentment that is evident in SA.

Lesotho is almost as big as Holland and the only country in the world where the surface is totally above 1400 meters. 80% of the land is even above 1800 meters! Highest point is 3482 meters. They call themselves “Kingdom in the sky”. In winter it is severely cold, in Summer there is a kind of African Alpine Flora, with many endemic species, specific for Lesotho. There are three major roads, north to Mokhotong, middle to the Katse Dam and south to Malealea. The roads are fantastic, as the photos show. There is one long road from west to east where it crosses the border at Quachas Neck. Straight after the border the road in South Africa is terrible.

It is strange to see the stereotype belied. With black people one expects hot simmering sunshine. Here they all are shivering in blankets in the morning and they wear a kind of balaclavas against the biting cold at this height. Also they are avid horsemen.
